I am a complete beginner and have found your site very useful. I want to build a small business site, I have no knowledge of HTML and have no website building software. So I want to choose a host and get some software (wysiwyg). You seem to be recommending 1&1 so I took a look at their offers and it seemed to suit me. But then I looked for reviews of their service and found that they have terrible reviews and are rated one of the poorest hosts. http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews151391.html
My question is why are you recommending them if they are as bad as people say?
There are plenty of hosts which get good reviews but they are only hosts and don’t provide website building software. Where can I get some software suitable to a complete beginner?

    Hi
This site uses 1and1 and so do several other of my UK sites. I have used them for over 6 years and am very happy with them.
I don’t like the fact that you only have 2 mysql databases with the business account and it is more expensive than some and that they don’t use cpanel but I only recommend what I use. If I didn’t like it and was thinking of moving I wouldn’t recommend it.
The big issues from the reviews I read on reviewcentre seem mostly to relate to support and billing. I had a billing issue about a year ago and they were ok and I have used their support ( can’t remember why) and don’t remember it being bad.
From a reliability point of view I have found them to be very reliable and for me that is very important. They also give you access to the .htaccess file which can be very important.
There are two wysiwyg free editors to look at Trellian webpage and Kompozer
    http://www.trellian.com/webpage/download.htm
    http://www.kompozer.net/download.php
I currently recommend Trellian but will probably move over to Kompozer in the coming months. I used to recommend NVU which got discontinued and which is why I moved to Trellian, Kompozer have taken the old NVU and revamped it and changed the name (legal reasons I think).
Anyway its open source and I use open source software when I can.
Incidentally I actually use Frontpage 2003 for my sites I only use the other editors in my online tutorials as they are free and so anywhen can download them and follow along.
That doesn’t mean I’m recommending FrontPage ( I find it OK) . I use it because of historical reasons.
You may also want to take a look at using Wordpress then you don’t even need an editor.

we wish to set up a basic simple website but we have already registered the domain names – what is the cheapest way to go having done this as I see you recommend doing it all in one go?

  • admin

The domain name you have can be used with your site as you should be able to point the domain to the host when you have chosen the host. However most hosts provide a free domain name and will usually let you transfer the domain you have to them when you set up the host. They usually extend the domain name registration for a year at the same time.
