Where is My Website Stored?

Here is a question I got recently:

———-

If I build a website will the information for that site be stored on my hard drive, or elsewhere? Will people still be able to access my site if I\’m not connected

—-

For some this question may seem a silly but for people new to  web site building, and probably even to many existing owners it is not so obvious where the site is stored. In fact there are probably many site owners who have had their sites built by a designer that have never really thought about it.

If you build your website using a PC website editor like Dreamwaver, FrontPage or Trellian Webpage then the site is created on you local hard drive. To you it appears like a real site, and it is, but it is only accessible to you.

The site on your hard drive is not available to people surfing the Internet. To make it accessible you need to publish it on the Internet and to do that you need 3 things.

  • A domain name i.e. www.mysite.com
  • Somewhere to store it that is accessible to other Internet users- A web host
  • A way of copying the site from your hard drive to the storage space on the Internet- Usually an FTP client.

However Creating a site using editing tools like Dreamweaver etc is not the only way of doing it. If you create a site using WordPress or any on line web page editor then the page is created and stored directly on the Internet, and all you then need is a domain name.
