I plan to start a website and request your valuable advice to clear my doubts. My plan is to start a website for selling study notes for students. There are different types of study notes to choose from and the prices are also varied. As it is an experience product, the customers are allowed to view the content only after making payment with paypal. I want the content to be copyright protected . I am confused about the following things:
    1) how to present the study notes (content) ? Should I allow the customers to save or download it or sent it to their email autoamtically after they made the payment? With these options there is every chance for the customer to pass it to others which I do not want to happen. Another method I am thinking is to provide a login and password to the customer when they make the payment so that they can access the information for a fixed period of time , say for 24 hours and after that the password should expire. In this option the customer should be able to view but should not be able to copy paste. I should be able to verify the email of the cusotmer automatically. Please advice me a viable solution to choose from and what features should I have to make these things happen in the website. Do you have any good suggestions regarding this?

    2) I want to build the website on my own using online help or any free software. ( I don`t ahve any expertise) I want to build the website with the help of a website builder provided by a web host. Does it create any problem in future with regard to compatability when I change my web host later ?
Can i use Microsoft Publisher to create website?
Please advice me the website plan for presenting these details and the technical features needed . I am on a strict budget.

    Thanks
    Lijo

    Hi

    In response to your question.

I would advice you start the site using WordPress and that way you are future proof and it is easier than doing it the html way.

    See my other site

    http://www.buildingwordpresswebsites.com/

Most people prefer downloads wordpress lets you password protect a page and so you could email them the link to the download with the page password.

I wouldn’t worry to much about them being able to copy and share the information as they probably will anyway. If you make the info only available online then you can password protect it and change the password at regular intervals and email the customers with the new password.

I wouldn’t go overboard with the security at the start until you are making sales.

Hi Steve, I’ve enjoyed reading your tutorials and recomendations.
I am a total beginer in Web sites but have some ideas about programming. It appears that WordPress would be a good way to start building a page but I don’t really understand why you don’t talk about wordpress in your “Web page and HTML editors” page.
I am planning to build a simple static web site and then embed other pages directly in to the html code. The other pages are web forms built using an online database application (Caspio Bridge). Caspio says that is as simple as copying the html code produced by the application directly into the html file.
Does wordpress allow editing the html file directly? Would you recommend that or would you recommend using another web page editor?

    Thank you very much!

I am currently building a site in WordPress using Twenty Ten theme. I have a few questions that I haven’t been able to find the answer in WordPress.

    1. How can I get rid of the Home in the Nav Bar and link the home page to the logo?
2.Can I add a news feed under the nav bar instead of at the bottom? Do I need to change the CSS code?
    Grateful for any response. Shari

  6. steve says:

Yes you can edit the html code

  7. steve says:

Don’t understand why you want to link to the logo or do you mean that you want the logo to be a link? To get the news feed at the bottom take a look at the footer widgets.
You should also take a look at teh course over at my other site.

    Hi Steve,

I’m trying to figure out how to optimize the URL strings on our site that link to each page.

For example, at radicalstudios.com, the URL for each page within the site is radicalstudios.com/interactive.html or radicalstudios.com/pictures.html.
I want to change the URL so it reads “interactive.radicalstudios.com” or “pictures.radicalstudios.com”. Thank you for your help.

    Hi Steve,
I have completed your beginners course on building a website with wordpress and found it very useful and informative.
However, I do have some problems which I could use your advice on:
My web hosting is on a Windows server and I can install wordpress as a web application on the domain name, but I have to add the URL Path “/wordpress” to the end of the domain name. As the site is for a business I would like to use just the domain name http://www.abc.com instead of http://www.abc.com/wordpress, is there any way that I can set up my URL path so that my wordpress site will be accessed just by typing http://www.abc.com into the address bar?
    Thanks

I enjoyed reading here, I teach english and as a teacher I found your articles friendly, easy to understand and informative, thank you Steve.

I have some questions, I ask one of them:

if Website B copies from Website A and many other websites.
(Website B includes the links to the original documents for any copied contents.)

    Now the questions:

Does website A gets any penalty?
Does website A gets a better ranking because of back links ( considering that B only generated duplicated contents )
Does website A get ignored by google indexing robot? ( can google by mistake define Website B as the original?)

    Thanks for your attention
