Do You Have a Question?

If you have a specific question or would like an article/video on a particular topic then I would be glad to hear from you, and hopefully be able to help you.

I’m using the comments feature of WordPress as the Q&A so until I hack the template ask your questions in the comments box (website field is not mandatory).

  • how is the easiest way and the first step to make web?

The first step is to make yourself familiar with the various elements like hosting domain names etc. See website basics.
Then you can start by learning a bit of HTML see starting html.
Then I would build a small 5 page site on your local PC (no need for a domain name yet or hosting).
This will get you familiar with linking page layout etc. Once you have got that far then you will need to decide on how you are going to build the site.
There are two main options HTML/PHP template or WordPress then its time for hosting and a domain name.
You may want to look at the new short course which guides you through the basics

I’m a little unsure what the difference is between constructing a site with Wordpress, Trellian, or something like Joomla. I don’t think I’ve come across a page on your site that explains the difference or why one would choose one over the other or even on what basis one would make that choice. I have a domain hosted at Blue Host now, and Wordpress and Joomla are available there, but I’m unsure even how to make a decision. Any thoughts?

Very Good question and not really easy to give a straight answer. Take a look at website building options-http://www.build-your-website.co.uk/Website-Building-Options.htm- It covers Trellian and WordPress. Joomla is far too complex for most and is used by professional web designers See http://www.build-your-website.co.uk/content-management-systems.htm
    Hope that helps

Many thanks, Steve. I have read most of the material you refer, but confess to having suffered from a bit of info-fatigue in the process.

Although I’ve done modest blogs, actually putting together a second-domain site is utterly new for me. Honestly, virtually everything I now know is from your site (for which: thanks), including Blue Host as my host.

I downloaded Trellian and fooled with it a bit, also watched your videos on it, but it seems Word Press is the better answer, not least because of the themes.

What I’m a bit fuzzy about is how to actually get a Word Press theme up on my site at Blue Host after downloading a theme (or using the defaults) and working up some content.

I *did* download Word Press at Blue Host, and added it to the main directory (I forget the terminology: so it was “the first thing people saw at the site”), but even after setting up a page, that was not the page that showed up on my site. ?? It read something like “Just another Word Press blog,” which was not at all what I had set up.

    So I uninstalled it.

    I will try again.

Long way around to my question:

Does one indeed have Word Press saved into the folder that defaults it to be the first thing people see at the site? I’ve not yet quite understood the difference between that and saving it to a folder “/after the domain name”.

    Have I misunderstood something?
    Thanks.

  • I made a start on my website yesterday but I can’t find a way back to it. You don’t seem to have a “login”

Your website isn’t hosted by me as I don’t offer those services. Do you know who is hosting your site?
